We would like to thank you for organizing a perfect family holiday in Kenya. It seemed extremely cramped to come for little over a week, but your meticulous planning made us loose no time in travel and feel like we had be gone for a month. From the intimacy of the Samburu to the overwhelming abundance of wildlife in the Masai Mara and the utter relaxation at Driftwood, we enjoyed it all.

Our three children (age 7-10) still sing their Swahili song and keep drawing giraffes, zebra's and lions whenever they can. Kenya made a lasting impression on all of us, thanks to a well planned and balanced itinery, even for a bit over a week!

Seeing the big game from a hot air balloon in the Masi Mara was going to be difficult to beat but walking through the bush with the Giraffe at Ol Malo was a truly moving experience. If you want to see Kenya, both as a Safari destination and as a place of true magic and wonder, I can not recommend Wild Times enough as the team to help you.”

We have just got back and reality is slowly seeping back in. We are no longer in paradise and in the good hands of Wild Times. We have had the most wonderful time and this has définitely been the best and most adventurous holiday we have ever had. The children are exhausted but thrilled, are still talking rhinos, lions, baboons, cheetahs, and of course dung beetles. We had all been looking forward so much to this trip but you have managed to beat our expectations.

The lodges were great, in particular Lewa and Little Governors and you seemed to have thought of absolutely everything. Although we were not sure about the stay on the coast, Lamu/ Shela it was exactly as you described. Lamu is an excellent place for rest and relaxation, great food and lots of water sports and not a tourist in sight. Karin, thank you once again for taking such good care of us, these have been the best three weeks holidays our family has ever had.

I feel I’m going to sound repetitive – but what else can one say after a safari with Wild Times? It’s just all so true....... Unbelievable, I never thought I would have that urge to get back there right away with my loved ones, to show them all the beauty Kenya holds (and I too have seen my share of beautiful places in this world...). The colours, the smells, the animals, the people, just everything is perfect. And, if you let Wild Times take you, every little detail will be looked after, and I mean every!

We spent 8 fantastic days in 3 amazing places with 12 demanding ladies and you would probably get exhausted only by starting to think about everything that needed to be arranged....but Karin just did it! In perfect dosage, sequence and always with that smile that says, I’ll handle it– and so she does...

OP SAFARI MET EEN ORGANISATIE.

U kunt werelderfgoederen in Oost Afrika op eigen houtje bezoeken maar het is niet eenvoudig om zelf een keuze te maken uit de enorme varieteit parken en lodges of om het transport binnen en naar die gebieden vanuit Europa te boeken. Dit kan u doen via Wild Times Safaris, een in Kenia gevestigd safari bedrijf dat wordt gerund door de Nederlandse juriste Karin Schepers-Bloem. Zij organiseert al zo'n tien jaar safaries (reizen in het Kiswhali), in Oost Afrika. Haar bedrijf verzorgt safaries op maat. Voor iedere groep (in familie of ander verband) stelt zij binnen het gewenst aantal dagen en binnen het gewenste budget een reis samen.

Zo wordt in nauw overleg met klanten een keuze gemaakt uit de te bezoeken parken en lodges en wordt het transport van en naar die parken op efficiente wijze geregeld. Deze safaries voeren ook naar de world Heritage gebieden in Kenya (Mount Kenya National Park, Lake Turkana National Parks en het schiereiland Lamu), Tanzania ( Serengeti National Park, Ngorong Ngorong National Park, Selous National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park en het eiland Zanzibar) en Uganda (Rwenzori National Park en Mbwindi National Park) .

Sommige parken zijn zo groot als de provincie Utrecht. Het is echter pure wildernis. Het wild leeft hier in zijn natuurlijke habitat zoals eeuwen geleden. Doel van UNESCO world heritage is om deze unieke gebieden te behouden voor ons nageslacht.

Some people told us that you would get bored if you did more than a week of safari. We did four safaris in three weeks and have not been bored or tired of it even for one minute! Thanks to a very well-balanced and well-organised programme that gave us a chance to see very different parts of Kenya, different animals, different tribes, different lodges and (admittedly very luxurious) tents. Picnics by a river where elephants were having a bath. Night- safaris where you see hundreds of little eyes lighting up..looking at you. A walk up a mountain (well..ok: a hill) to enjoy a view that has been untouched by the last centuries.

Visits to small villages where the small children started crying (never seen a white person!) or wanted to touch your skin and the elders proudly showed their homes and cattle. But also lunch by the swimming pool or sundowners by the fire and relaxed dinners of high standards, the kids sometimes being carried to their beds by beautiful Samburu warriors because they fell asleep after dessert. A wonderful experience that neither we nor the kids will ever forget.

De wereld trok en in 1995 reisde Karin Schepers, samen met haar echtgenoot, af naar Kenia. Hij vond snel emplooi bij Coopers & Lybrand als managementconsultant, zij zette zich in voor Childlife Trust, een Keniase organisatie ten behoeve van hulpbehoevende kinderen. Schepers zette tevens een souvenirhandel op, met de hotelindustrie als belangrijke klant. Zodoende kwam zij in contact met een aantal bijzondere 'wild life lodges' en 'camps' en ze besloot deze te gaan vermarkten, onder de noemer Wild Times Ltd.

De natuur speelt een belangrijke rol in de economie van Kenia. De voornaamste inkomsten komen in feite van het land. Koffie, thee, katoen. De tuinbouw is ook niet onbelangrijk. Hollandse tuinders doen het hier goed. Schepers: 'Heel wat sperziebonen, die in de schappen van de Nederlandse supermarkten staan, komen uit Kenia. Ook een aantal belangrijke rozenkwekers zocht hier hun heil.

En met verve. De landbouwsector is de snelst groeiende in Kenia. Er is een gunstig klimaat, de lonen zijn laag en Kenia ligt relatief dicht bij zijn afzetmarkten. "Wildlife" is een andere asset. En wildlife trekt toeristen.' Kenia werd in het jaar 2004 door maar liefst 1,4 miljoen toeristen bezocht. En dit jaar wordt waarschijnlijk afgerond met 1,6 miljoen bezoekers, van wie een kleine 26.000 uit Nederland afkomstig zijn.

'Kenia biedt ongekende zakelijke mogelijkheden. Door de stabiele achtergrond en de (relatief) goede infrastructuur vestigen vele multinationals hun regionale hoofdkantoren in Nairobi. Voor Nederlanders is, dankzij de samenwerking tussen Kenya Airways en KLM , Nairobi uitstekend te bereiken. De positionering van dit land als dé Afrikaanse hub heeft de bereikbaarheid van Nairobi
enorm verbeterd. Nieuwkomers die hier hun zaakjes goed regelen kunnen in een relatief korte tijd een zeer lucratieve business opzetten. Vodafone is een goed voorbeeld. Binnen vijf jaar hebben ze het meest winstgevende bedrijf van Oost-Afrika opgebouwd.'

'Toch is hier niet alles rozengeur en maneschijn', waarschuwt Schepers. 'Het is lastig goed opgeleide en gemotiveerde medewerkers te vinden. Velen emigreren, vertrekken naar bijvoorbeeld Australië en Canada, om daar een nieuw leven op te bouwen. Jammer, want er liggen hier zoveel mogelijkheden. En de kennis vloeit weg. Als je hier zaken komt doen: maak hele goede afspraken, op papier.

Laat je, als het om aanzienlijke belangen gaat, goed adviseren. Want anders gaat het fout. En loopt het mis en je zoekt de rechtsgang: het rechtssysteem is hier anders dan in Nederland. Geschillen die bij de rechter eindigen worden vaak vele malen uitgesteld. En als je eenmaal aan de beurt bent, kun je je niet echt op de letter van de wet beroepen.' Het systeem is niet transparant en eenduidig, dus het is niet aan te raden om te gaan procederen.

Ook het belastingstelsel is anders. Ofschoon het in eerste instantie eenduidig lijkt, is er een heel aantal vage regels en regeltjes waaraan men zich dient te houden. De Kenya Revenue Authority is zeer bedreven in het incasseren van belastingen. En als er ook maar enige verdenking bestaat wordt er direct een 'tax audit' uitgevoerd. Hierbij is het haast onmogelijk om alles goed gedaan te hebben, en je kunt dan een flinke discussie verwachten.

'Withholding tax' en 'witholding VAT' maken de administratie onnodig lastig. Neem daarbij in aanmerking dat we hier in een volledige 'papieromgeving' leven: je dient dus de nodige administratieve medewerkers in huis te hebben. 'Maar de eindeloze natuur, de vergezichten, de ruimte en de vrijheid maken gelukkig veel goed.'

Nairobi is de oude hoofdstad van de Engelse kolonie, wat nog steeds goed te merken is aan een aantal gebouwen. De temperatuur ligt tussen de 24 en 27 graden en 's nachts koelt het lekker af. Het park midden in de stad met het drukke verkeer is heerlijk. De vele rassen, stammen en nationaliteiten zijn ook terug te vinden in het restaurantaanbod, dat internationaal is. Nairobi kent naast rijkdom ook grote armoede en heeft veel sloppenwijken.

De onderneming van Schepers is gespecialiseerd in het aanbieden van safari's op maat in Oost-Afrika en concentreert zich op het midden- en topsegment. De klanten komen voornamelijk uit Nederland. Schepers: 'Uit mijn eigen netwerk, mensen die hier op safari zijn geweest. De lengte van de reis is doorgaans tien tot twintig dagen. We hebben hier ook een bijzonder strandleven. Rustige en authentieke plekjes zijn nog te vinden. De combinatie van wild life en strand is uniek.'

Schepers brengt haar gasten bij voorkeur 'off the beaten track', afgelegen dus. 'En een niet onbelangrijk punt is dat ik Nederlandse ben, de cultuur van mijn gasten en de cultuur hier ken. Dat spreekt, zo ver van huis en haard, veel van mijn cliëntèle aan. We zitten hier toch op een totaal ander continent.'
